This is how BZ handles your data. We tried to write it so you can actually read it. If something here doesn't make sense, ask us at legal [at] bleedzao [dot] com.
BZ is run by Tyler out of Utah, USA.
What we collect
Stuff you give us
Your email address. It's how you sign in, since bz doesn't use passwords.
Your username, display name, avatar, and whatever else you put on your profile.
Your posts, comments, reactions, likes, and anything you upload (images, audio, video).
Your settings, like which notifications you want and which kinds of posts you've chosen to hide.
Anything you send us directly, like an email, ticket or feedback item, etc.
Stuff that comes from using the site
Which threads you've opened, so we can show you unread comments.
Your notifications.
Basic technical info like IP address, browser, and device type. Our servers log this, and it helps us keep the site running and spot abuse.
Usage analytics through PostHog, like which pages get visited and which features get used.
Cookies We use a cookie to keep you signed in and PostHog uses cookies for analytics. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
What we do with it
Run the site: sign you in, show your posts, send your notifications.
Moderate. Every post gets checked automatically (more on that below), and mods can see reported content.
Figure out what's working and what's broken.
Email you about your account, like sign in links. We don't send marketing email. If we ever do, you'll be able to opt out.
We don't sell your data and we don't run ads.
Automated moderation
Posts are processed by Jev. Jev reads each post to pick its topic, flag likely spam or trolling for a mod to review, and label posts that are political, AI-generated, or NSFW so people can hide those if they want.
To do that, post content is sent to TypeSafe, the company behind the model Jev uses. Some posts may also sent to Anthropic's Claude for things like filling in a missing title. These companies process the content to give us an answer.
Jev flags things. Mods make the calls. Jev doesn't ban anyone.
Who else sees your data
We use a handful of services to run BZ. Each one only gets what it needs.
DigitalOcean hosts the site, the database, and uploaded files.
Cloudflare handles DNS and sits in front of the site.
PostHog for analytics.
Resend sends our emails, like sign in links.
TypeSafe and Anthropic for automated moderation, as described above.
KLIPY powers GIF and sticker search. When you search for a GIF, your search goes to KLIPY.
Stripe handles supporter payments. Your card info goes straight to Stripe. We never see or store it.
We'll also share data if the law makes us, or if it's needed to protect someone's safety.
What's public: your profile, posts, comments, and reactions are visible to signed-in members. Your email address isn't shown to anyone.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from settings. When you do:
Your sign in is deleted, and the account can't be brought back.
Your profile is closed out, but your posts and comments stay on the site. Threads fall apart when replies vanish out of the middle of them, so we keep them. They'll show as from a deleted account.
If you want specific posts gone, delete them before you delete your account, or ask us and we'll help.
Server logs and backups roll off on their own. Logs are retained for a year, backups are retained for 7 days.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email legal [at] bleedzao [dot] com. Depending on where you live (the EU, the UK, California, and other places), you may have more rights than that, and we'll honor them.
Kids
BZ is for people 17 and up. If we find out someone under 17 has an account, we'll delete it.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your data, but no site is perfectly secure. If something goes wrong that affects your data, we'll tell you.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll post about it on the site before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
